This blog is about providing an argument which either supports or disagrees with this statement. ‘swearing is a sign of limited vocabulary’
When words fail us, we tend to swear. Oner, research in linguists show that when words fail is we tend to either say ‘urmmmm’ ‘ers’ and even ‘like’. So people who have tended to swear or use taboo language are dumb or are they smart?
There have been many articles on swearing and taboo language which either provides the information that if you swear you are seen to be more intelligent or that you don’t have a wide vocabulary bank. For sure people to use taboo language and swearing in a creative way are mainly using it for an effective accomplishment which, is to emphasise what they are portraying or because no other lexicon can convey the expression like a swear word can. So maybe, people who swear frequently in their day to day language are more sophisticated in the linguistic sense that they can use these resources to create their point, which is closed to be intelligent. This then links to verbal fluency which also connects with swearing. Researchers found that the ability to use taboo language and generate swear words are positively correlated with verbal fluency.
On the contrast to the point of people who swear are linguistically more educated, some researchers say that swearing conveys a lack intelligence and untrustworthy individual. These people are judged by other peers to be less likeable and more aggressive. In an article it was proved that swearing release anger and makes you stronger whilst doing activities so could that be why when we loose a game we tend to swear, then have more determination to succeed in what we are doing as we are releasing the anger and manipulating it into a different outcome. Majority of the time, swearing is used in a negative and rude context which will portray the idea of unintelligence. Swearing and using taboo language is a habitat and maybe not a good one either. Our society now has painted a picture that swearing is bad and specifically picked out words that are rude or discriminating because of their frequent use in today’s society. Prejudice is mainly related to this; people will judge someone on their use of vocabulary. First impressions aren’t very helpful with a potty mouth! This is why people have a judgement on frequent swearing as they will initially think they are unintelligent and rudely mannered. So is swearing actually bad?
Personally I think that society and the norms of living have provided us with a judgment that people who swear are stupid, angry and rude when in fact if used in the correct context has been proven to be a more creative way of conveying a point. If In doubt taboo language and swearing is used frequently and not in the correct context I think shows that you’re vocabulary isn’t wide. It truly depends on the context in which the taboo language is put in.
